Before you step onto the first platform, you will be given a lot of equipment. This equipment, while bulky and clangy, is your lifeline on the zip line course. It’s essential that you understand what each piece of equipment does before you start your tour. The professional zip line guides will walk you through what to do before you begin, but they probably won’t go into the minute details. In today’s blog, Empower Adventures reviews five crucial pieces of equipment that make zip lining possible.

Trolley

One simple piece of metal can make or break your zip line experience. To quickly glide down the track, you must have a trolley. These trolleys consist of two or more pulley wheels, which ride on the top of the cable, taking you safely from platform to platform. Each trolley has a different speed rating. These trolleys will limit your speed as you fly down the cable, making sure you stay at both an appropriate and safe rate.

Harness

Harnesses make a significant difference to your zip line experience. These sturdy pieces of fabric allow you to sit back and enjoy the feeling of weightlessness. Harnesses consist of buckles and loops that wrap around your waist and thighs, keeping you in place during the adventure experience. With the harness, there is also a lanyard, which allows you to sit back as you glide down the cable. The harness is clamped to the trolley, taking you from platform to platform.

Carabiner

Carabiners are very common in rope-related sports and even in some work fields. They are simple metal brackets that are very strong, some withstanding even thousands of pounds of pressure. The weight of these carabiners is very important. On a zip line course, the most common carabiners are made of steel. The perk of steel carabiners is being extremely strong for how lightweight they are. These carabiners clip onto the trolley, other ropes, and your harness for many safety precautions.

Brakes

One of the most important aspects of a zip line course is the braking system. While you fly down the cable, you can pick up speed quickly, so stopping at the right point is crucial. Each zip line course is different, and they could use different braking systems. Some of the methods include:

  • Active Braking
  • Leather Glove Braking
  • Passive Braking
  • Bungee Braking
  • Spring Braking
  • Gravity Braking

It is a good idea to talk to your guide before your first zip to see if you need to brake for yourself, or if you just need to enjoy the ride!

Helmet

Helmets are crucial for your safety on the zip line course. They are designed to fit comfortably on your head while staying in place during the entire adventure. These helmets protect you from the cable and any unforeseen falling objects. Some even have mounts for GoPro cameras so that you can record your whole experience!
