Joe DeRing is the founder and President of Empower Adventures and has used his military experience to create a place where people can have fun and powerful adventure experiences together. Joe’s mission is to help others break through their own limiting beliefs and find the courage inside to overcome fear and challenge. This is what the Army did for Joe and what he hopes to do for those that visit Empower Adventures.
I contributed to a recent article that describes how team building can help veterans acclimate back to civilian life. As much as I cherish helping others using Empower Adventures programs and experiences; I think it is fair to say that Empower Adventures is a big reason why I have been able transition back to being me.
I’m not sure where I’d be if I didn’t have Empower Adventures. I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life when I made the decision to leave the Army in 2008. I had spent my entire life wanting to be a soldier and there I was walking away from that dream.
Being deployed to the Middle East for over 850 days had taken a toll on me and on my wife and family. I also knew deep down that I wasn’t the same person I was before I left for the invasion of Iraq in 2003. This is a reality I continue to deal with nearly 10 years later.
